Sources and method

Fans' memories of this band are full of dates that have been wrong for decades. An archive that repeats them is worth nothing, so every fact here has to show where it came from.

The rules

  1. Dates, venues, line-ups, labels, catalogue numbers and chart positions are kept as structured data and validated by automated tests. They are never taken from generated text.
  2. Every entry cites at least one source. An entry with none cannot be built.
  3. Precision is part of the fact. If only the year is known, only the year is shown.
  4. Where sources disagree, the entry says so and names both, rather than quietly picking one.
  5. No concert, record or press item can list a musician on a date outside their time in the band. The build fails if one does.
  6. Every entry starts as unreviewed. Until an editor has checked it against its sources it carries a visible notice and is kept out of search indexes.
  7. Some essays were drafted with the help of an AI model. Those carry a visible note, and the same review applies.

How sources rank

From strongest to weakest: the record itself (sleeve, label, run-out groove) and contemporary documents such as tickets, posters and venue records; the music press of the time; reference databases (MusicBrainz, Discogs, setlist.fm, the Official Charts Company); later secondary accounts, including Wikipedia and biographies. Wikipedia is used as a starting point and is replaced by stronger sources as they are found.

What is not published

Lyrics, sleeve artwork, press and concert photographs, scans of articles, and audio or video, all of which are protected. Nothing about members' private lives. No speculation about disagreements within the band. No ratings or verdicts on the music; contemporary reviews are reported with attribution.
